Lucky, Yellow Bluff's Latest Visitor
It’s amazing what I see through my window. Lucky, the Diamondback Terrapin, is a regular Yellow Bluff visitor. You can tell by the crack in her shell. Last year, Lucky tried to lay her eggs in the oyster shell golfcart path, but she moved to a safer location. This year she is making her way through the grassy Bluff Park right by Ashley Creek. She’s looking for the perfect spot to lay her eggs. It’s exciting!
Diamondback Terrapins are marine turtles who make their homes in the marshes and lagoons of our area. It’s the only species of turtle in North America that spends its life in the brackish water. See Life History: Georgia Sea Turtles by the St. Catherines Island Sea Turtle Conservation Program.

Lucky has been coming to Yellow Bluff for years. I’ve put her back in the water a couple of times. She’s easily identified by two cracks in her shell. Apparently, Lucky makes her home in our waterways. She’s always welcome here.
I need to adjust my comment … I have seen Lucky a couple of times because she is easy to recognize because of the cracks in her shell. I put her back in the water because I was concerned about her welfare. A long time ago, we found a sea turtle and it was tagged “Mississippi” and it had traveled a long way to get to us. Lucky seems to live in this area and comes and goes as she pleases.
Debra, Yellow Bluff is a beautiful place! A peaceful place! And your blog is tempting me to return! Last Fall we had such a wonderful time there and our Eco Tour with Captain Wild Bill was so much fun. It is definitely a top 10 place to vacation (or “staycation”).
