Beat the Dog Days’ Blues –Darien Waterfront on Saturday

From our unofficial social director, Yellow Bluff resident, Joyce Jarrell:  “Take a look at the poster below about a fun evening at the Waterfront on Saturday to benefit the organization known as HART – Humane Animal Resource Team. The work that HART has done to promote the humane treatment of area stray dogs and cats is amazing! If you are a supporter or just want to enjoy great music, come to the Darien Waterfront for an evening with Walter Parks who has played with Richie Havens around the world for the last eight years.   He has a single coming out under the Judy Collins’ label in September.  Don’t miss it if you love folk and jazz.  Hope you’ll support this worthwhile event in Darien on August 14th, 7:30 – $10 donation and beat those Dog Day Blues!”

Gift Wrap Company Sale … A Thrill For Bargain Shoppers

How would you like to go to a specialty card or paper store in the mall and find most of your gifts for a dollar or two or less?  Heaven, right?  Well, heaven got a little closer on Friday at the Gift Wrap Company sale (officially the International Greetings Factory Store sale).  All of my purchases ranged from 50 cents to $2.00 with the majority priced at $1.00.  Okay, it was heaven for me  because it’s never too early to pick up a perfect holiday or birthday or anniversary or baby gift.

Select from variety of specialty notebooks ... and the gift bag to wrap it.

I’m not going to mention everything I got since quite a few were for future Christmas presents and a birthday present or two.  But I will say that I was able to buy a group of “themed” items for $6.00 that would have set me back well over $30.  (Actually, I found 7 items that worked together for a wonderful gift for $6.00 – I love it!)  Is it shameful to give a $6.00 gift?  I also found the perfect gift for two hard to buy for folks … $2.00 each.  I’m feeling a little guilty.  But in the store, each would have been $10.00 to $15.00.  I could even splurge and give them two in different patterns to be used for different purchases.  Do I have your interest?

For the office, I bought specialty file folders and cocktail napkins.  I also picked up several packs (50 quantity) of large dinner plates with coordinating dessert plates of heavy duty paper, scalloped edges, and intricate designs… large plate normally $10 (their price but higher in a store), small plates normally $7.99 … purchase price for both:  $1.00.  And I bought gifts for Mom, Meredith, but nothing for my husband Allen (even the Gift Wrap Company can’t compete with the golf gift certificate he now expects … but they did have some great golf notebooks to keep track of scores, handicaps, etc.)  Throw in some  gift bags, tissue, ribbon, holiday and occasion cards …

Not bad, right?

Susan Davis (center) & helpers box up my purchases. Expenditure: About $50.

My only regret … There were some darling baby gifts, but my hands were full, and I wasn’t sure if I’d used all of the ones I purchased last time.  I know that I used two over the summer… So I’ll make sure I re-stock at the upcoming sales:  Friday, August 20; Friday, September 3; and Friday, September 17.  Susan Davis who heads up the International Greetings Factory Store sale said she’ll be announcing the October through December dates in September and will have a Saturday date.  Honestly, you can’t afford to miss the sale even if you only focus on wrapping paper, gift bags, tissue, and ribbons.

The International Greetings Factory Store is located in the Midway Industrial Park (about 12 – 15 minutes from Yellow Bluff — a straight shot on the left of Highway 84 across I-95).  Store hours: 9:00 AM – 5 PM.  Only open on designated dates.  For info:  912-884-9727.

Joyce & I attended the February, 2010 sale.  Take a look.

Don't miss your chance to get holiday essentials at the next sales.

Snooze You Lose … Yellow Bluff’s Early Morning Visitors

White Ibis Visit Yellow Bluff

Yellow Bluff had 300 to 400 early morning visitors before most residents arose.  But not our early riser, Coastal photographer extraordinnaire, Joyce Jarrell.

Enjoy Joyce’s recap over morning coffee about the White Ibis (a species of wading bird) that caught her attention …

“This morning at about 7:40, I looked out my window and saw something white moving on the grass between the cottages and the townhomes at Yellow Bluff.  I moved to get a closer look and realized it was a HUGE flock of birds.  I jumped up, threw on some clothes, and grabbed my camera.  When I got closer I could see it was a flock of White Ibis.  I was trying to count as I crept closer.  My best guess was well over 300 and some had already flown away on my way over.  It was AMAZING!!!”

“The heavy humidity was fogging my camera lens, and I knew my time was short, so I just kept clicking.  I was able to get within 30-40 feet of the birds before they flew off toward the marsh.”

***

Joyce has the photos to prove it.  Note:  The younger ibis have the dark on the neck which sometimes confuses them as wood storks, a bird that we see often at Yellow Bluff.

Okay, it’s a common occurrance for people who’ve lived on the coast all their lives … maybe not at this magnitude.  But for me, it is UNBELIEVABLE.  What a sight to behold.  By the way, did anyone hear the “hunk, hunk, hunk” of the male?  Or the squealing of the female?  You can often hear the “croo, croo, croo” when they are foraging.  – Capt. Wild Bill , Yellow Bluff’s certified Master Naturalist, with his patience and attempt to teach me a few things about birds always encourages me to look and listen to learn.  What a wonderful experience to have the opportunity to enjoy this morning visit.  Joyce, thanks so much for sharing!

Enjoy and be amazed.
